Emmanuelle Béart

Born: Gassin, France, 1965.

French actress (daughter of singer Guy Béart) who rose to prominence as the young heroine of Claude Berri’s Manon des sources (1986), for which she was awarded a César in 1987. At that point, her fame rested mainly on her exquisite beauty, later prominently displayed in Jacques Rivette’s La Belle Noiseuse (1991), where she plays a nude model to Michel Piccoli’s obsessive painter. She subsequently matured into the archetypal sensitive young woman of art cinema, especially with her role in the internationally successful Un coeur en hiver / A Heart in Winter (1993, directed by Claude Sautet, co-starring, as in Manon des sources, Daniel Auteuil) and in Sautet’s Nelly et M. Arnaud (1995). She also starred in Claude Chabrol’s L’Enfer (1994). Her part in the U.S. production Mission Impossible (1995) alongside Tom Cruise may signal a new departure.
