  1. maxy says:

Fogához veri a garast = Hit one’s teeth with a coin
Ordít, mint a fába szorult féreg = Shout like a worm stuck in a tree
Bámul, mint borjú az új kapura = Stares like a calf at a new gate
Kosarat kap = Getting a basket
Megüti a bokáját = Hurt their ankle (~Get their fingers burnt)

Nem zargat a tatár = The tartar isn’t urging
You say it when you want to remind somebody, that he/she doesn’t have to hurry, because he/she hasn’t got any serious reason for it, or when you are urged but you cannot see the point of it.
A long time ago people thought that this proverb was a memory of the Tartar campaign of the 13th century, but it isn’t true because the phrase rather relates to the Turkes, as the Tartars were the most frightful soldiers of the Turkish Empire. So it’s not a wonder that people were afraid of the Tartars and ran away when only hearing them come. The phrase cleerishes the memory of the full flight’s hurry.
The campaign of the Mongol-Tartar Empire against Hungary, during which they did enormous havoc, was in 1241-42.

Több is veszett Mohácsnál = More were lost at Mohacs
People are likely to use this saying as a comfort if somebody suffers damage or loss. It means that it isn’t worth grieving because bigger trouble could have happened.
The most tragic battle in the Hungarian medieval history took place on 29 August, 1526. In that bottle all the 25000 members of the Hungarian army suffered a crushing defeat from the Turkish army, which was led by Sultan Suleiman II. Suleiman aimed to occupy the whole country.
The saying has a version which might originate from the 16th century, and it refers to the fall of Buda in 1541: ” More were lost under Buda.” This means that in Hungary, which was divided into two parts, the Turks occupied Buda by a trick, without any swordstrokes.
